Gordon Cave's Story
In 1989 I was rushed to the Royal Victoria Hospital and diagnosed with chronic liver desease caused by a virus, probably hepatitus. My health deteriorated badly. I suffered from constant nausea, severe fatigue and became very confused. In 1996 I had to retire from work on health grounds. I was 51 years old.
My family and I were devastated when I was told that the only hope I had of survival was to see if I was suitable for a liver transplant. I went to Kings College Hospital in London for assessment and was put on the transplant list in March 1997.
By this stage I was very ill indeed and was bedridden. It was a terrible time for all all of us. Waiiting for the phone to ring. I did not know if I was going to get a new liver in time.
Then I got the call that saved my life. I had a transplant in Kings on 13th October 1997. I returned home after three weeks and now have a good quality of life subject to drugs and hospital regime. I enjoy every day now and I am so grateful for the extra time I have been given.
So many people helped me. My family and friends, doctors and nurses. However, none of this would have been possible without the generosity of my donor family. To them I would like to say a very special thank you.
